Located on the most beautiful square in the world in a true architectural jewel, the Museum of the City of Brussels tells the story of our capital through its rich collections. Place de la Monnaie

Place de la Monnaie is hosting chalets offering typical mountain food and drink along with a wide range of sweets and other treats to delight those with a sweet tooth.

Place De Brouckère

Place De Brouckère has been a pedestrian area for several years, and will host the ice rink and the curling rinks as well as numerous catering chalets and covered terraces to create a warm and friendly mini village. Here, the traders are using reusable tableware for the second time, again participating in a test which augments the ever-increasing existing sustainability measures.

Christmas Tree

Cut down on Wednesday 15 November in Lier, the tree is adorned with symbols carved in the wood which represent several of Quebec’s Indigenous nations. You’ll find the Mi’kmaq Star: an eight-pointed star which has been a symbol in Mi’kmaq communities for centuries, representing the sun, a powerful figure in traditional spiritual life. Snowshoeing: Transport tool used by all the First Nations of Quebec. An Inukshuk (plural: inuksuit): a pile of stones or rocks used to communicate with humans in the Arctic. And finally, a Dreamcatcher: The legend of the dreamcatcher recounts that good and bad dreams circulate in the night air. The web allows good dreams to pass through and captures bad dreams, where they perish with the first light of dawn.

Title : What’s that sound?

Music, with all its richness and diversity, unites us all. Both multicoloured and multicultural, it transports us, lulls us with emotions and encourages us to share, to discover and to explore! Using this unifying spirit, Magic Monkey is creating a universal sound and light show for this edition on the theme of a great musical exploration around the world. This is a cultural discovery shared by all – a breathtaking, image-rich, sound-soaked and colourful celebration of a diversity which connects us through the music of our world.

Skating Rink

The ice rink is back on Place De Brouckère and is open until 7 January There is an area for toddlers, and skates which are placed over shoes are available. The large rink is completely covered by a transparent roof.

Ferris Lotto Wheel

Located just a stone’s throw from the fountain, this unique museum displays almost 150 exceptional outfits by Brussels’ most famous inhabitant. Spirit of the North

Fashion and Lace Museum

The emblematic wrap dress is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. The museum is dedicating its new exhibition to the designer Diane von Furstenberg. This is a  first in Europe! Discover the inspiring career of this Brussels-born fashion icon.

Woman Before Fashion is not a retrospective. It’s rather a free approach to Diane von Furstenberg’s work. The exhibition presents the work and the person of the famous Belgian-American fashion designer. The tour begins with fashion and ends with women through a selection of more than 50 models and a vast iconography.

Discursive Mechanisms

Location: Façade at 21, boulevard Anspach - 1000 Brussels.

During the day, Discursive Mechanisms reveals ancient engraving techniques. At night, the façade takes on another dimension thanks to animations projected onto the building.

This resolutely contemporary composition borrows various references from medieval iconography, comics, pop culture and video games. Produced by Brussels-based engraver Fred Penelle and Franco-Swiss video artist Yannick Jacquet.

Fantastic Brussels

Eerbetoon aan René Magritte

Ter gelegenheid van de 125ste verjaardag van René Magritte heeft de Stad Brussel ervoor gekozen om de beroemde Belgische schilder te eren met verschillende kunstinstallaties, in samenwerking met de Magritte Stichting en de Musea voor Schone Kunsten. Surrealisme was dit jaar ook een overkoepelend thema op verschillende evenementen.

Tijdens WINTERPRET kun je nog steeds het parcours “In het spoor van Magritte” ontdekken en zullen enkele collages in de kijker worden gezet.

VISMARKT / SINT-KATELIJNEPLEIN

Hier vind je de meeste chalets met allerlei hartige gerechten en zoetigheden, en natuurlijk ook originele geschenkideeën. Tussen twee aankopen door kun je een leuke activiteit meepikken, zoals een ritje op het reuzenrad of op de draaimolen…

Muntplein

Dit jaar wordt het prachtige Muntplein omgetoverd tot een après-skidorp.

Er worden drie kunstmatige curlingbanen aangelegd, omringd door chalets die typische berggerechten en -drankjes zullen serveren. Zoetekauwen kunnen zich tegoed doen aan het ruime aanbod van snoep en ander lekkers.

De activiteiten op het De Brouckèreplein lopen door tot zondag 8 januari..

De Brouckèreplein

Op het De Brouckèreplein, jaren geleden omgevormd tot een voetgangerszone, vind je naast de schaats- en curlingbanen ook tal van chalets met horecagelegenheden en overdekte terrassen, die samen een warm en gezellig minidorp creëren. Het is dit jaar de 2e keer dat de handelaars herbruikbaar serviesgoed gebruiken. Daarmee herhalen ze een test die de steeds talrijkere maatregelen op het gebied van duurzaamheid versterkt.

Gemeenschappelijke Overdekte Terrassen

Onze gemeenschappelijke overdekte terrassen zijn dé ontmoetingsplaats van WINTERPRET. In deze bemeubelde en verlichte ruimtes kun je lekker beschut even op adem komen in een uitnodigende omgeving.              

De kerstboom

Data: 24.11.23 - 07.01.24

Locatie: Grote Markt

De boom is op woensdag 15 november in Lier gekapt. Hij is versierd met uit hout gesneden symbolen die representatief zijn voor verschillende inheemse volken uit Quebec. Zo is er de Micmac ster: een achtpuntige ster die al eeuwenlang symbool staat voor de zon in de Micmac gemeenschappen, een grote kracht in het traditionele spirituele leven. De sneeuwschoen: een middel dat alle First Nations van Quebec gebruiken om zich voort te bewegen. Een inukshuk (meervoud: inuksuit): een stapel stenen of rotsen waarmee bewoners van het Noordpoolgebied met elkaar communiceren. En tot slot een dromenvanger: volgens de legende circuleren goede en kwade dromen in de nachtelijke lucht. Het web laat goede dromen door en vangt de slechte, waarna ze bij het eerste ochtendgloren vergaan.

In deze geest van verbinding creëerde Magic Monkey speciaal voor deze editie een universele klank- en lichtshow rond het thema van een muzikale wereldreis. Aménagée depuis plusieurs années en zone piétonne, la place De Brouckère accueille la patinoire et les pistes de curling, ainsi que de nombreux chalets de restauration et des terrasses couvertes pour donner vie à un mini village chaleureux et convivial. C’est ici que les commerçants utilisent pour la 2e fois de la vaisselle réemployable, reconduisant ainsi un test qui renforce les mesures de plus en plus nombreuses en termes de durabilité.

Black tower

Located behind the Saint Catherine’s Church, the Black Tower is one of the best-conserved relics of the first fortifications of Brussels constructed at the start of the 13th century.

On a stage in the shape of an igloo, the spellbinding voices of the Winter Vox choirs will ring out one after the other, amplifying the magic of this hidden treasure location.

For the first time the Black Tower will host the Enchanted House, where children are the kings and queens of the party.

Covered Terraces

Our covered terraces are the meeting place of Winter Wonders, with protected, fitted and lit areas offering you a special break in a welcoming environment.

Sapin de Noël

Dates : 16.11.23 – 07.01.24

S’il y a bien quelque chose qui symbolise Plaisirs d’Hiver, c’est son fameux sapin. Il trônera bien fringant aux côtés de la crèche traditionnelle, au centre du spectacle son et lumière de la Grand-Place.

Coupé le mercredi 15 novembre à Lierre, le conifère sera érigé sur la Grand-Place le jeudi 16 novembre dès 6h. Il sera orné de symboles forts représentatifs de certaines nations de notre invité d’honneur, les 11 Nations autochtones du Québec : une étoile, un inukshuk, des raquettes et un capteur de rêve, tous sculptés dans le bois et créés notamment par Pascal Sioui. Le sapin prend vie pour la toute première fois le vendredi 24 novembre, lors de la cérémonie d’inauguration à partir de 18h.

During WINTER WONDERS you can still explore the “In the Footsteps of Magritte” trail, and some of the collages will be highlighted.

La journée, Mécaniques Discursives révèle des techniques de gravure ancienne. À la nuit tombée, la façade prend une autre dimension grâce à des projections.

Le sapin

Coupé le mercredi 15 novembre à Lier, le sapin est orné de symboles, sculptés dans le bois, représentatifs de plusieurs nations autochtones du Québec. Vous retrouverez l’Etoile mi’kmaq : étoile à huit branches, elle est un symbole chez les communautés mi’kmaq depuis des siècles, représentant le soleil, une figure puissante de la vie spirituelle traditionnelle. La Raquette à neige : Outil de transport utilisé par l’ensemble des Nations autochtones du Québec. Un Inukshuk (au pluriel : inuksuit) : un empilement de pierres ou de rochers dont la fonction est de communiquer avec les humains présents dans l’Arctique. Et enfin, un Capteur de rêve : La légende du capteur de rêves dit que les bons et les mauvais rêves circulent dans l’air nocturne. La toile permet aux bons rêves de la traverser et elle capte les mauvais rêves où ils périssent aux premières lueurs de l’aube.

The City of Brussels is keen to ensure that craftspeople from Brussels and beyond benefit from the Winter Wonders commercial showcase.

This year, no less than 30 chalets will display the label with the distinctive sign of craftsperson-producers. They meet the various quality criteria required to obtain the WINTER WONDERS label, including the origin of the products.

Éloge de l’air (In praise of air)

Éloge de l’air was born of an innovative co-production between the City of Brussels, Metz and Quebec, based on the principle of inventing an installation dedicated to travel and intercontinental collaboration, while embodying the idea of movement. There are 9 swings with 2 seats, topped with a gold flag which activates lights. This interactive installation is located at Mont des Arts.

The beauty of Sainte-Catherine Church, recently renovated by Beliris, has been enhanced by the illumination of 3 facades.

It remains to be seen if we only mention the concerts and not in particular the illumination, which is more than that.

Santa's Reindeer merry-go-round

Location: Place De Brouckère

This enormous Santa, a 2023 novelty, can carry up to 32 people in his 8 reindeer- and sleigh-shaped gondolas. The peak reaches a height of 10 m, and the gondolas can take passengers up to four metres high so that they can admire the market site in complete safety.

This attraction has already proved very popular at many Christmas markets, and is a big hit with children.

Plein Publiek Bxl – happiness expo

Located in the magnificent Palais de la Dynastie on the Mont des Arts, PLEIN PUBLIEK BXL has built up a buzz on the Brussels events scene. As well as events, they serve delicious Lebanese dishes in their restaurant.

Since March 2023, the exhibition HAPPINESS EXPO has been on show, an initiative of BEYOND.CULTURE in collaboration with Studio Irma.

Art makes us happy! Winter Wonders opens its doors on Friday 24 November at 12 pm.

The inauguration takes place at 6 pm on the same day, with the lighting up of the Christmas tree in the Grand-Place followed by a performance of traditional dances by the Sandokwa troupe (Huron-Wendat), Inuit songs from Nunavik and the first sound and light show of this 2023 edition. It’s also an opportunity to showcase the new features and some of the most striking installations.

On Sundays, Magic Sundays are filled with performances by passionate magicians.

VISUALS 2023

This year's Winter Wonders poster features the colours and style of Brussels illustrator Elzo Durt.

Born in 1980, this graphic designer and illustrator creates his images from engravings, drawings and textures. Then he creates his supercharged images, a mix of surrealism and pop art, always in flashy colours.

His compositions feature fantastic characters, straight out of a dream. This faraway winter wonderland allows the collective imagination to be inspired… the emblematic characters of Winter  Wonders are represented here to form an unusual and joyful timeless family.

An installation by our vuests of Honour with the with the 11 Indigenous Nations of Quebec

A renowned traditional Anishinaabe artist, Frank Polson is responsible for the work in the courtyard of the Town Hall. Strongly influenced by his childhood (when he went hunting and trapping with his father), Frank Polson reproduces a natural world where loons, wolves, eagles and other wildlife abound. Anxious to preserve and promote his traditions, the painter also draws on his rich ancestral culture to choose his themes.

Frank Polson paints in the “Woodland” style, an internationally recognised artistic movement which exudes a modern freshness of colour and dynamism despite being fundamentally traditional.

Heiresses exhibition

Conceived as part of the Art Nouveau year, “Héritières” aims to create a dialogue between past and present by connecting Art Nouveau artists and contemporary artists working in the same media (textiles, silk painting, sculpture, engraving, etc.). The aim is to get to know these artists better and to see how their shared practice creates a real link between them.

While the Art Nouveau style advocated equality between all the arts, gender parity was far from being a reality at the time. While history has remembered the names of Art Nouveau artists, women were rarely focused upon unless they were associated with men. Their invisibility is sometimes linked to the fragility of the chosen medium, but more often than not to a withdrawal in the face of society’s dictates.

In A bread in the wall, Sofhie Mavroudis questions the notion of transmission, particularly through language and tradition.

Starting from an incomplete knowledge of her paternal language, she uses gesture to initiate a change of state and gives the different objects she creates a symbolism of their own.

The timeless strangeness which emanates from Antoinette d’Ansembourg’s installations is drawn from the territory of the city, where new building sites spring up daily. Shaputuan Tent

A Shaputuan is a traditional Innu tent used as a meeting place to share culture. It’s a traditional
winter home for the Innu and was used during hunting expeditions in the territory during the cold
season. Traditionally covered in skins, the Innu long ago switched to cotton canvas.

It is available to enjoy for five weeks of interesting activities
• Meetings and conferences with Indigenous figures
• Projections and multimedia experiences
• Skills workshops: observe and learn about traditional arts and crafts
• Tales and legends: immerse yourself in stories from the 4 corners of the Indigenous territories
• Artistic performances: watch traditional dance and song performances

Reusable tableware

Since 2016, reusable cups have been used for the entire Christmas market. The use of reusable tableware for food containers is being extended to Place de la Bourse and Place de la Monnaie this year, following an initial trial in 2022 at Place De Brouckère.

Museum van de Stad Brussel - Broodhuis

Het Museum van de Stad Brussel, gelegen aan het mooiste plein ter wereld, in een waar architecturaal pareltje, vertelt het verhaal van onze hoofdstad aan de hand van zijn rijke collecties. Schilderijen, wandtapijten, keramiek, gravures, maquettes, kaarten en plannen Made in Brussels. Op de 1e verdieping nodigt de ruimte Tussen haakjes jou uit om capsuletentoonstellingen te ontdekken met enkele voorwerpen uit de opslagruimte.

Op de bovenste verdieping onthult een zaal de ontwikkeling, de transformaties en de geschiedenis van de Grote Markt, die sinds 1998 op de Werelderfgoedlijst van UNESCO staat. En om je bezoek af te ronden moet je zeker het originele standbeeld van Manneken-Pis bewonderen!

Garderobe van Manneken-Pis

Dit unieke museum ligt op een steenworp van de fontein en toont bijna 150 uitzonderlijke kostuums van de beroemdste Brusselaar. De kostuums zijn afkomstig uit alle hoeken van de wereld en worden per thema tentoongesteld: beroepen, persoonlijkheden, burger- of sportverenigingen, en niet te vergeten carnaval en folklore. Elk jaar worden meer dan twintig nieuwe kostuums geschonken om de garderobe – die nu meer dan 1.100 kostuums telt! – uit te breiden. Jong en oud kunnen ook hun behendigheid testen door het ketje aan te kleden! Dat is niet makkelijk, het is een echte kunst!

Museum voor het Kostuum en de Kant

De wrap dress, de emblematische wikkeljurk, viert dit jaar zijn 50e verjaardag. Dat is voor het museum de gelegenheid om zijn nieuwe tentoonstelling te wijden aan de ontwerpster, Diane von Furstenberg. Een primeur in Europa! Ontdek de inspirerende carrière van deze Brusselse die is uitgegroeid tot een internationaal mode-icoon.

Woman Before Fashion is geen retrospectieve. Het is een vrije benadering van het werk van Diane von Furstenberg. De tentoonstelling presenteert het werk en de persoon van de beroemde Belgisch-Amerikaanse modeontwerpster. Via een selectie van meer dan 50 modellen en een uitgebreide iconografie vertrekt het parcours bij de mode, om te eindigen bij de vrouw.

Discursieve Mechanismen

Overdag toont Discursieve Mechanismen oude graveertechnieken. Bij het vallen van de avond krijgt de gevel een andere dimensie met behulp van projecties en verandert in een hedendaagse compositie met referenties naar middeleeuwse iconografie, strips, popcultuur en videogames. Een creatie van de Brusselse graveur Fred Penelle en de Frans-Zwitserse videokunstenaar Yannick Jacquet.

For this edition, Brussels by Lights puts the spotlight on the Chartreux district. This trendy and bohemian neighbourhood is located between the Saint-Géry and Dansaert districts. For five weeks, six light installations will make it more Instagrammable than ever.
A walk of about 45 minutes allows visitors to admire the illuminated creations and to discover the pretty shops that give the area its unique character.

Koti Sauna aims to promote the social and popular culture of the Finnish sauna by installing its mobile sauna in various original locations in Brussels. Meet us in the Secret Garden of the Grand Hospice to warm up before or after a stroll through Winter Wonders.

Éloge de l’air (In praise of air)

Éloge de l’air was born of an innovative co-production between the City of Brussels, Metz and Quebec, based on the principle of inventing an installation dedicated to travel and intercontinental collaboration while embodying the idea of movement. There are 9 swings with 2 seats, topped with a golden flag which activates lights. This interactive installation is located at Mont des Arts.

Installations lumineuses, concerts acoustiques, humoristes locaux… et même des saunas chauffés au bois ! Détente garantie dans l’ambiance feutrée des fêtes de fin d’année.
